Since Myanmar recently gained democracy more tourists have started coming to visit the country. Tourism is a natural part of Myanmar’s development, but it also comes with consequences. The neighboring country, Thailand, is an example of these consequences. Traveling in Thailand it becomes evident that Thailand has adapted to the requests of foreigners that expect a tourist friendly country in every way. One of the major problems is that the Thai military gains most of the profit from the tourists, which makes it even harder for people to fight for democracy. It would be a shame if Myanmar lost the unspoiled beauty it possesses today. Hence in order to protect itself from unwanted consequences of tourism Myanmar should focus on developing a true democracy.
Myanmar has to be aware of the potential consequences of tourism and focus on building a true democracy. (In Danish)
